Work of the Trust
In accordance with its overall purpose and aims, the work of the St Giles Educational Trust includes the following:
TEACHER TRAINING
The Trust provides initial and in-service training courses for native speakers and overseas teachers of the English language. These include courses leading to a Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), as well as refresher courses and continuing professional development for practicing teachers.
Teacher Development
In addition to the above, we provide grants to support seminars, lectures, exhibitions, publications and other activities which develop and enhance the skills of British and overseas teachers.
THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME
The scholarships are used to support both individual students and overseas teachers who could not otherwise afford to come to the UK to study English language or develop their teaching skills. On some of the activities which are funded through the Scholarship Scheme, the Trust also works in partnership with other charities and international agencies in order to ensure that the impact is maximised.
THE ELT LIBRARY
A specialist reference library is provided at our premises in Bloomsbury (Central London) which is entirely financed by the Trust. The library includes a wide range of English language text books, self-access materials and facilities for private study and offers free access to members of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) as well as other British and overseas teachers and research students. The library also organises events for students and runs a programme of regular seminars with external speakers via its Teachers’ Tuesday Club, at which teachers and other ELT professionals worldwide are welcome.
RESEARCH
The Trust undertakes research on various topics relating to the teaching and learning of language and develops and publishes related information materials and tools. Where appropriate, we work with UK and overseas partner organisations from the ELT or wider language teaching sector and academia.
ACCOMMODATION
We arrange accommodation for students and trainee or practicing teachers, who are studying on courses at St Giles International schools. In most cases, this is provided free of charge to students and teachers who are in receipt of a St Giles Educational Trust scholarship.
